Hello Again!!!

Hell City Glamours

It's been a while between drinks for me as far as post go.I have been listening to heaps of stuff since last I posted. Saw HIM from Finland at Festival Hall here in Melbourne back in March (who are one of my favourite bands but not one of the most exciting bands live).
There have been many great Albums that should make my end of year best of, in fact I will do a best of so far (mid year) list with my next post.
For this one I will do a current playlist.

1/Motorhead - Motorizer 2008 (early listenings say it is right up there as one of their best)
2/Silver - World against World 2006 (Norwegian Garage Punk Metal with attitude)
3/Rose Hill Drive - Moon Is The new earth 2008 (mixed bag of sounds from this 60s/70s throwback band)
4/Midnight Travellers - 2004 - Old Rock, New Blood (ep from a Black Crowes soundalike band)
5/Candlebox- Into The Sun 2008 (good return although I prefered Kevin Martins solo album from a few years back)
6/Rick Springfield - Venus In Overdrive (Always consistant artist who has delivered again)
7/Black Crowes - Hotel Illness (Bootleg) - Live in L.A. '91 & Australia '92 (fantastic sounding live boot plus I saw them on this tour so it brings back memories)
8/Hell City Glamours - debut Album 2008 (fantastic local band with a Hanoi rocks meets Dogs Damour with a dash of LA metal a la Gunners. Highly recommended)
9/Harem Scarem - Hope 2008 (solid enough final album from these once mighty melodic rock merchants)
10/Whitesnake/Motley/Dokken- Still listening to all these Oldys but goodys latest albums. Proving that 80s Hard Rock Bands still have the goods.

On a local sporting note, let it be known that the Pies have had it and the Cats have got it as far as this years AFL premiership goes.

Alpha Galates- A Stimulus for Reason - Album Of The week

Bought this thru I-Tunes and it is as good as the reviews prior to its' release have been.Although it is progressive metal with long drawn out songs, it never loses your interest mainly due to the variety of styles (sometimes all in the one song) . It is a mix of Tool with bits of thrash metal (think Metallica and Megadeth) with the more melodic elements of Kings X and even the slightly experimental sides of Winger. Highly recommended. - 9/10

Mr Universe - Massive Appeal 4 trach EP

Mr Universe- Massive Appeal . 4 Track EP.

1/Massive Appeal
2/Spin
3/India's Wild
4/Not That High

Mr Universe were a Melbourne band from here in Aus. They were a great live act around the pubs and clubs in the early 90s that started as a bit of a retro 70s cover band early in the piece who later became a very good guitar rock band. This one and only ep features some very strong tracks, especially "India's Wild" which has a fantastic hook. For some reason they remind me of a heavier Enuff z Nuff (probably why I liked them, and similar in style to Mr Brown who came along later). This was released in 1993. Not sure what happen to the guys but I can remember seeing them at the Tote In Collingwood along with Starworld who were also a retro rock band at the time (I may post their 1st ep next)

Oni Logan- Head Set EP (ex lynch Mob)

Here is a 2 track Ep released by Oni Logan (ex Lynch Mob vocalist on the brilliant Wicked Sensation album). It is far removed from the 70s hard rock he produced on the Logan Robinson album but still very enjoyable all the same. More rootsy less rocky probably covers it.

This features two tracks – Damaged and My Part Of Town.

Firewind- The Premonition - Album Of The Day

The latest album from Greek metalers Firewind continues where the last one left off (I must say i only got into them when the latest vocalist got on board) Good melodic power metal with strong vocals (he reminds me a bit of Bruce Dickinson). Some of the guitar riffs sound like classic Dokken at their heaviest. The only downfall is a pointless cover of "Maniac" from the Flashdance soundtrack. I can't stand metal covers of 80s pop songs. 7.5/10

EP of the Week- Sun Dog - Lost In A Sense (ex Cry Of Love)

What I have here is the 2 track Ep from The latest project to feature Kelly Holland the origional lead vocalist of Cry Of Love. That album, "Brother" is one of my alltime favorites. I had wondered what Kelly had been up to after all these years. Well here is the answer. He sounds as great as ever. Hopefully this is the beginning of a full album. Give it a listen and let me know what you think.

Here is a bit of info that came with the download from Cd Baby (cost Me $1, not bad I thought)-

SUN DOG: Lost, In A Sense
http://cdbaby.com/cd/sundogmusic2
Straight ahead rock music with a slightly dark edge & catchy melodies with a strong pop sensibility. The vocals are soulful & passionate.

1 - Trippin' Blind
2 - Walk Away

Former Cry Of Love vocalist Kelly Holland & songwriter/guitarist Rick Watson began working together a few years back. These songs are the result of a recording session that took place in Raleigh, North Carolina. The passion is self evident. Hear it for yourself.

Kelly Holland- Vocals
Rick Watson- Guitars
Jeff Dennis- Drums
Scotty Miller- Bass guitar

Hardcore Superstar- Live review

I made it out to see a band last Saturday night 02 Feb, compliments of my mate Johnny Gray. It is the 1st time that the Swedish sleaze metal legends Hardcore Superstar have made it to Australia. They put on a really good show consisdering their guitarist had quit only a week or so prior. Bloody loud i must say, which is probably due to the fact we were right up the front. The turnout for a Sat was a bit dissapointing but made for a comfortable viewing experience. Jocke is a brilliant frontman who has unending energy. The whole band were very tight. The latest songs from the new album translated well live, in fact i have revisted the album since and found that i like just as much as the S/T one, which wasn't the case at 1st. Song of the night for me was "We don't celebrate Sundays" which they did in the encore. The guys came out and met the fans afterwards and i went snap happy with Johnnys camera. They seem like great blokes. A most enjoyable rockin night

Big Cock- "Motherload"- Album of the week

Big Cock- Motherload

I just downloaded the latest album by the mighty Big Cock from I-Tunes. It has been high on my wish list since last year. What a great American Sleaze rock album it is. Plenty of meaty riffs not to mention the fantastic vocals of Robert Mason. Gee he has one massive set of lungs. There are plenty of tongue in cheek lyrics that will bring a smile to your Dial. Try M.I.L.F on for size. It is not to say they are a novelty act, justt a fun time party band. I imagine they must be great live. Highly recommended! 9/10

Playlist 1

Here is a list of current albums i am listening. Some are new and some are old.

1/Boozed- Tight Pants . Great German straight up rock album. Better than what Airbourne have done. Not so obviously ACDC.

2/Enuff Z Nuff- Lost In Vegas. A new EZN is a good thing. Classic band . Not a bad album.

3/Tora Tora- Revolution Day (finally got my hands on a MP3 copy). One word "Roxx!!!"

4/BLACK BAMBI - BLACK BAMBI .Sounds good for an album that was shelved by Atlantic. Produced by Beau Hill!.

5/Egypt Central- Egypt Central (new alternative metal band) Modern rock done well.

6/Avantasia - The Scarecrow . New progressive Metal allstar project. Sounds Huge!

7/Pillar- For The Love Of The Game . As good as the last. Heavy but melodic

8/Scott Matthews - Passing Stranger. Reminds me of the late great Jeff Buckly mixed with another deady, Nick Drake. Unusual but i like it for something different.

9/Bang Camaro- ST. Ever woundered what it would sound like to have 100 guys singing while guitars are riffing? Well here it is. Interesting but not essential. Sounds very much like video game music!

10/Scorpions - Humanity - Hour 1 . For some reason i didn't get into it at the time of release. But after seeing it on many best of lists i revisted it and it is very good.

Album of The Day - StoneRider, "Three Legs of Trouble"

Wait till you hear the new album from StoneRider. Although it does have a "southern Rock" sound to it, there is more of a "Gunners" vibe going on than anything else. Melodic metal for mine and done brilliantly by this young American band. It is hard to say if this will do well but if there is any justice in the world StoneRider should be the next big thing. The song "juice Man" is one of the best monster riff tracks you will hear all year. Highly recommended !!!! 9/10

Pic of the day- Hanoi Rocks

Here is a picture of the latest incarnation of the mighty "Hanoi Rocks"( live at a Finnish festival). The guy on the left is Conny Bloom. He was the lead man of the late 80s early 90s Swedish band Electric Boys. Gee i miss their fantastic Groove orientated hard rock. By the way. The latest Hanoi album is a brilliant peice of work. Do youself a favour and pick it up.

Preview Albums

Couple of new albums i have heard this week are Enuff Z Nuff- Lost in Vegas and a couple of tracks from the Long rumored 3rd album from Tora Tora- Revolution Day. The EZN album sounds promising, but one of my pet hates (and a sign that a band is stuggling) is that it has 2 covers ( a Beatles .. What a surprise! an a Prince cover). It also has a different version of a track from an earlier album. That is a total of only 7 new songs. The production sounds a little muddy, but the songs sound good, typical EZN.

The 2 tracks from the Tora Tora album (via Myspace- http://www.myspace.com/krazz123) sound fantastic. Can't wait till someone finally gets this out. I still love listening to their debut album (which i have on record)

General Best Of 2007 List

It always amazes me to read the best of lists on internet sites with comments like "terrible year for music...." etc. My problem is that there is always too many great albums to narrow it down to a top 20 let alone a top 10. Last year is no exception with many brilliant releases in all genres. I am going to put down all the albums that meant something to me during the year and then narrow it down to a "Top 20", some time next week with some comments on each album.

Album of the day

I set the Ipod for a walk this morning on the new Hydromatics album- "The Earth Is Shaking". Great little album. Scott Morgan is in fine form on this release. His soulful vocal delivery sounds brilliant over the garage rock sound the band creates. The song"Power and Glory "was the one that did it for me the most. Tuneful but heavy at the same time. They do a great rendention of the Stones song- "All down the Line". 8/10

My music listening habits

I have created this bog as a way of tracking my music listening habits. I have a huge appetite for music. Mainly Hard Rock and Metal but i also enjoy plenty of Other styles. I have a soft spot for many Classic Rock artists such as the Stones and Faces.
I intend to make comments and review the albums that i may be listening to at any one time. I hope to get plenty of feed back from like minded music and pop culture fans.
