Powderfinger Self Titled 1st E.P 1992

The Mighty Finger have called it quits. A rock institution here in Oz have decided enough is enough and are finishing up. Their latest album (Golden Rule- 2009) and tour is their last. They truely are one of the great bands and although it is a shame the cynic in me can't help but feel they will be back at some stage (when they need the dough I suspect).

Lead singer Bernard Fanning is sure to release solo material. His 1st and only solo album "Tea and Sympathy- 2005" was a huge hit.

Here is where it all started. Their self financed 1st Self Titled EP from '92 sometimes called the blue ep (due to the cover). This is not a great representation of the band but it's very rare. I owned this but sold it to on ebay (to someone in the UK) a few years ago for over $200.00 bucks. Not such a good idea since they are splitting up. I am sure it's worth heaps more now!!!!

Horsehead- ST 1993

Great debut album from this Aussie band out of Melbourne. Saw them live heaps and they put on one hell of a show.

Here is the album in all its glory.

Slightly grungy (was popular at the time) but more classic rock than anything else. Elements of Zeppelin and The Cult (Sonic Temple era). Highly recommended!!

Been a while between posts but here is what I am spinnin' at the moment.

1/ Reckless Love-ST
Great 80s style H/rock done well

2/ Airbourne- No Guts, No Glory
More of the same from these Aussie Hard men

3/ HIM- Screamworks
Better than the last one. Saw them live a couple of weeks ago at the HI Fi bar in Melb. Ville was in a foul mood which spoiled the gig. Blamed the drummer for errors, complained about the mic stand, moaned about his ear plugs not working in the heat and just seemed he didn't want to be there.

4/ Audrey Horne- ST
Brilliant modern rock/Metal album with fantastic vocals (reminds me of Faith No More in parts)

6/ Year Long Disaster- Black Magic:All Mysteries Revealed
Improvement song wise from the debut. Puts me in mind of Wolfmother in their classic rock delivery

7/ Lifehouse- Smoke and Mirrors
Best album in a while. Bit heavier than recent efforts

8/ Brian Howe- Circus Bar
Classic rock done with an 80s sense of melody. Puts me in mind of Rick Springfield

9/ Treat - Coup De Grace
Fantastic riffs. Very Immediate with great songs.

Brillianty done stuff from a dude over at Sleaze Roxx who takes older albums and spruces them up to sound more modern.

Finally got the Vain - All those Strangers and it sounds fantastic. Shame it never got released back in the day but I don't think it would have been the difference to make them a big band. The bubble had burst by that stage for hard rock (91) and the debut never really did much which doesn't diminish the fact both are brilliant. Hope Davey releases some new product this year (sooner than later)

VAIN- ALL THOSE STRANGERS is coming!!!!!

I recently got a new Iphone and have decided to transfer some of my favourite albums onto it.

I will keep my Ipod classic for new music and leave the older stuff on the iphone for easy access. Consequently I have been revisting some older classic 80s/90s hard rock.

Still plenty of new stuff that I have been getting into as well-

1/ Cowboy Prostitutes- Let Me Have Your Heart( latest sleaze rock album from this Swedish band)

2/ Milestones- Devil In Me (verging on album of the year it is that good. A real surprize Gem)

3/ WASP- Babylon (the more I listen the more I like it. Apart from the pointless covers this is brilliant. The solo guitar work is outstanding and this is the best sounding album they have done since Headless Cross)

4/ Alberta Cross- Broken Side Of Time ( fantastic alt rock with emotion, elements of Neil Young and Kings of Leon but better)

5/ Sorry & The Sinatras- Highball Roller (Catchy as hell punk rock with balls, Sorry is also in Wildhearts and plays Bass but this is his band and it is actually better.Imagine a heavier and Punkier Demolition 23)

I have ordered Vains previously Unreleased 2nd album All Those Strangers from Music Buy Mail ($40.00 odd dollars Aus). Can't wait to finally get a proper copy and Shelve the old Bootleg forever. Easily one of my top 10 bands of all time. How I wish They would tour Aus.

Playlist 29.10.09

It has been some time since I last posted a playlist. Many fantastic albums have pased through my ears in that time, but here is what is currently doing the trick.

1/ Mama Kin- In the City.
Swedish classic 80s Hard rock sound. The lead vocalist puts me in mind of Paul Stanley. After a couple of good EPs this sounds like a fantatstic album.

2/Babylon Bombs- Babylons Burning.
Another Swedish band. You can definately here Chris Laneys contrabution on the production. He has not only made them sound better but has brought out the guys songwriting which I thought always let them down slightly.

3/Bon Jovi- The Circle.
Although this is better than most of their recent releases it is nowhere near as good as classic Jovi albums. Pleasant suprise though.

4/Wolfmother- Cosmic Egg.
Fantastic Aussie rock album which is as good as the debut. Brings in even more elements of Stoner rock and has a couple of poppier tracks which may find thir way onto commercial radio.

5/Grand Design- Time Elevation.
Huge Def Leppard sound also from a Swedish band. Great album but some tracks are a bit samey and the vocalist has a slight accent which is a little annoying.

6/ Rod Stewart- The Rod Stewart Sessions 1971- 1998 box set (4 disc).
Enjoyable stop gap until Rod decides to show some balls and do a real album not the covers crap he has dished out for nearly a decade. How can such a brilliant talent (early 70s especially) lose the plot by so far. Something to do with money I suspect. Even so this an enjoyable set which shows some of his biggest hits in a different light and features numerous outtakes from his career.

New Wolfmother

Just finished listening to the new Wolfmother album Cosmic Egg.Although the bit rate was low it still gave me a good indication of how the album sounds. If anything they now sound even more like Led Zepplin. I like what I hear and look forward to getting the actual product in my stereo system.
